Augmented reality has spread into retail shopping. In October 2014, the apparel store Raoul tested out a virtual mirror that allowed customers to see themselves in some of the clothing the store sold without having to try them on. The mirror utilized Microsoft Kinect running augmented technology software and although it was in beta, it offered a glimpse of what the future of shopping might look like.
In addition, Raoul introduced another form of augmented reality in the fall. The IQNECT app, which runs on the Android and iOS operating systems, allows users to view extra content about clothing on display by snapping a picture. Shoppers who download IQNECT can view Raoul’s fall/winter 2014 collection and take a virtual tour of the Raoul store to earn a $100 electronic shopping voucher that incentivizes them to bring their shopping into the augmented world.
